    Hotel d'Angleterre 1872

    1872

The Hotel d’Angleterre is the work of the celebrated architect Anthony Krafft, conceived and later acknowledged as a heritage site of the city of Geneva, offering 30 spacious rooms, most of which had a spectacular view of Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc.

    princess Louise of Saxe

    1903

Princess Louise of Saxe stayed at Hotel d'Angleterre, and hired a French teacher Mr. Giron to tutor her children. They fell in love and she stayed in Switzerland. This resulted in the loss of her royal title. It is believed that the fifth child of the princess was conceived with Mr. Giron.

    Hotel d'Angleterre Early 1900's

    1910

In 1910 the hotel was extended by the addition of another wing, with the main entrance moved to the Rue de Monthoux. This included 70 bedrooms, a reading room, a smoking room, restaurant, terrace, elevator, electrical lighting, and rooms with bathrooms and steam heating.

    1911

At this time, rooms at the hotel cost four Swiss Francs.

    Geneva 1960

    1960

Hotel d'Angleterre was acknowledged as one of the heritage sites of the city of Geneva.

    1995

The hotel closed for 12 months for the most ambitious renovation, in which only the listed facade, the internal staircase and the floors were preserved. This gave birth to a new interior that combined a more contemporary charm, elegance and convenience with all the hotel’s traditional refinement.

    2001

Hotel d'Angleterre was bought by The Red Carnation Hotel Collection.

    2020

We were delighted to be voted No.2 in the Top 15 Hotels in Central Europe at the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

    Explore our history...

Built in 1872, the hotel is a true city landmark, with an impressive facade designed by celebrated architect Anthony Krafft. Not only is Hotel d’Angleterre famous for its refined style and generous service, but our pedigree means we are also proud to have some of the longest-serving members of staff of any hotel; one member of our concierge team was with us for 42 years.
